I came across this website http://www.halabol.com/ and found it pretty interesting. It, unlike other social networks these days, is a place where you can make your voice reach out to people all around the world and make an impact on the society.
Yes, there are many such sites like StumbleUpon and Digg that allow you to share your content and let people see them but they are more of sharing stuff and letting more people know about what you want them to hear but the difference here is that this website, Halabol, is doing it for a cause. They want a better society altogether and want an active participation by the society itself! They might also release some API's in the near future which might help in tracking social movements and social activists. Non profits organisations can benefit a lot from this initiative, All they need to do is create a petition and let people join in.
So you are connected to all people that join in for a cause and that too everything happens at realtime! So no longer you need to think twice before joining a rally/protest if other people are turning up on the spot or not, since it happens a lot on websites like Facebook where you see tons of people RSVP to an event and only about 30-40% of the actual number only turn up. So if we have an application that can track the happenings at realtime it would clear out all the chaos and confusion and help people think straight and make quick decisions too. Everyone can share their videos/images or even thoughts at realtime. So Halabol is a platform to do something for a cause.
So you can share your ideas on a topic or take a pledge to uplift the society on the whole and be the spark that initiates the change.
Also Halabol is a sponsor at HACK 2012-Code for a Cause , an initiative by Google Developer Group New Delhi, where in developers from all over India are going to sit in and develop an application for the society, that is a 2 day hackathon for a cause. So it is actively involving itself into the social Non Profits around and helping the society be a better place to live in. Do check it out and leave your comments below.
